Brazilian graphist Douglas Alves' itw // People // Added 2009/07/16 at 10:29

> Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Hello, I am Doug Alves, from Brazil, Graphic artist and Illustrator, living in Los Angeles since 2007. I started my career doing interactive projects in 2000, since then I had the oportunity to work with big brands such as  Coca Cola, MTV, Microsoft Zune, Burton Snowboards, Bbc uk, Citroen Brasil, Havaianas, Honda Motors and among others.

> How did you start doing illustration? Had you ever thought you could work by making what you like?

I first started working on interactive field, working for agencies and studios. Then I decided to develop my skills and my illustration style, so I became freelancer in 2005. I always pushed illustration and collages on my compositions even when doing corporative projects for interactive, so I guess it helped me to understand and learn how to do commercially. To be honest, I never thought I could make money working and exploring my own style.

I'm really grateful for all I've been thru in my career, but I am sure there are many others to step in still.

> What are your inspiration sources?

Every nice moment that makes me feel better brings me inspiration, mood is something very important in my life, when I am happy, things goes smoothly. Any good news from family, a nice music, a good night sleeping, I guess whatever makes me laugh its a start for inspiration.

As far everything goes I am already planning a personal project for next year, focusing in fashion with illustrations, maybe mixing photography, typography. I hope I find time to spend in this. For now I would say, working on 2 cool projects, and got some new photos from a photographer friend of mine Brandon Savoy and I can't wait to mess with them.

> What artists (music, photo, fashion, etc...) should our readers discover? (please provide some links)

Tom Jobim

I have a vinyl from Jorge Ben Jor,  he's does happy songs, it's so Brasil !

Also I've listened to Bensé, I wish I could understandmore french, I love his songs.

I have bought a book recently about Charley Harper, he's my favorite artist right now, specially how he spent his life dedicated to art.

My favorite photographer now is Ruven Afanador, I love his work, I wish I could do something with him someday, that would be awesome.

> Your favorite adresses in your city?

I'm living in Santa Monica, it's part of the Los Angeles county, it's located by the coast. So I kind live 8-9 blocks from the beach. I am always around, walking on the 3rd Street Promenade, it's the point in Santa Monica, people from all the globe comes and the place is always full. I am always checking out books and magazines at Hennessey Ingals, lots of material to explore and stay tuned. Also I like to go to Bergamot Station, always fresh things to look at, many artists works. Another point to shop design, is at Sawtelle Blvd.
