> Hi K.S, can you briefly introduce yourself?

Hi Jean-Pierre, I’m 23 years old and from Avignon.  I have been a DJ for about 10 years and a producer for two, I mix everything from FM House to Ghetto-Tech.

> What sort of careers or studies lead you to where you are now?

Certificate in Computer Science, plus a few years of English lit in college.  All this and I end up today doing music; and it’s thanks to music that I never really had to do an industrial job.  Let’s hope it all stays this way.

> Your last project?

I gave up the «Ghetto Music » stuff to produce some House Club music.  I worked with a singer on this project and it will come out under a different name…very soon, I hope.

> Any upcoming projects or events?

Right now, the above project has been taking up all my time, so there will nothing coming out under « K.S » for the moment.  Maybe DJ Deeon’s remix of « Gimme Head » will come out on Dance Mania U.S.  It’s been on hold for a while, but it’s upcoming.
The song « Down Widdit » was remixed by Qoso and Clap Mike. Qoso’s a personal friend that signed a remix for Radioclit’s last full album which came out on Mental Groove. Clap Mike is a promising talent from Montpellier.  Other guys from my group are certainly going to be doing the same thing soon , we’re going to try to get our stuff signed on a European label.

> “Down Widdit” reminds us of DJ Assalut’s Ghetto-Booty sound (sleeker, though).  Does it frustrate you that the ghetto music scene is so underdeveloped in France?

I don’t find it that similar to DJ Assault—it’s colder and less sexy, but I am flattered by the comparison !
Does this frustrate me?  No, I knew getting into it that the scene wasn’t that big here and I didn’t do the EP hoping to change things, so there were real surprises.  I just enjoyed myself, which allowed me to meet really cool people who bought the EP.  I think the experience was everything but frustrating.  I mean, of course I would like to see a bigger scene here…but this music is so far different from our culture.  We’re just light years from this sort of stuff—when you translate DJ Assaults lyrics into French, you understand that this is something that just isn’t done here currently.  And when you find out that most people found out about this scene by listening to the remix by DJ Funk for Justice, it’s just scary.  That being said, it’s never too late.  But really, how were people able to listen to Teachers des Daft without wondering who the people being cited in the song were?  These guys are all from the Ghetto scene.  But Goon & Koyote are bringing really quality to Ghetto music in France.

> How would you describe your upcoming Myspace Mix?

Old school revival 2008.
There’s some old stuff, new stuff, club music, Ghetto…how would you describe it?

> With the arrival of Justice, and the work of Ed Banger, Institubes and others, lots of genres have been broken down and mixed, especially when played live.  However, these days it’s become so fashionable that it seems like we’re always hearing the same sound.  How do you feel about this?  Is everyone just going around in circles?  You gotta help us!

Well I’d like to help and bring something new, but that’s never really been my style, nor has it been Ed’s nor Insti’s.  I really love these two labels, but I never really could personally relate to the sound.  I trust SebastiaAN and Oizo to put the smack down and turn things around.  I am so excited to listen to the next Oizo album.  Plus, I am really not the right person to talk about that scene, frankly, I don’t like that many things.  I think I would like certain people to take some distance from what they listen to and what they do.  But I have no real lessons or advice to give.

> Do you think that Myspace and other social networks have changed the way you work and the way you promote yourself?

Myspace hasn’t changed the way I work.  For me, it’s a communication tool and not a work tool.  However, I make songs using MSN, we do sort of a ping pong back and forth, it’s very beautiful.  It’s obvious that Myspace made me ‘known’, that was where I could meet for the first time Godfather, Deeon, Slugo and a lot of other artists.  I spend hours on that site….such bullshit!

> You’re a DJ plus you’ve been signed on the mythic label Databass.  Does that help you get girls (or boys!)?

Meh, I have what I need and that’s perfect for me.  The others can have the groveling groupies.

> Favorite Alcohol?

I’m not a big drinker.  I think that blending lemon Fanta is about the best drink there is.

> How would you describe a successful party?

It doesn’t matter where it is, it just has to be with my friends or with interesting people.  Above all, it’s got to be a party where we don’t talk about music.

> Your 3 favorite movies?

‘Breathless’ by Goddard.  Truffaut + Godard = perfect pair, not counting of course Belmondo + Seberg = sublime couple.  I think I could talk about this movie for an entire evening, but the best thing to do is just see it.
‘The Samurai’ by Jean-Pierre Melville. Down wid gangstaz. Actually, Melville has a cameo in one of the best moments of ‘Breathless’.
Last but not least, ‘Man Bites Dog’ with Poelvoorde.  Classic shit.
These movies are all very gangster.

> Congratulations, you’ve won a 2 year vacation on the Lost desert island!  Which 3 CD’s would you bring?

I would use the occasion to take a break from music.  I would take a piano with me and I would practice day and night.  I know that this seems contradictory.

> The last great thing you’ve seen, read, heard or done?

Daft, live in Nîmes.
Eating at the Carlton in Cannes.
Everything just seems bland next to those two.

> Ok, just one fashion question: for you, fashion serves what purpose?

Hmmm….I was starting to write a very complex and long explanation but I erased everything.  Too long, too complicated, but my conclusion was : to spend …too much money…on junk!
