[REPORT] WHO'S NEXT '11 by COMME UN CAMION // Happening // Added 2011/10/04 at 12:02

During 4 days, 3 bloggers browsed the trade show looking for next season’s special oyster pearls. Let me introduce you to Caroline from mademoisellequincampoix.com. Thanks to her laptop and camera, she has shared her special favorites with their readers. Enough said, discover her prose here…

And we’re on! The sun is shining at Porte de Versailles and we’re so glad we’re wearing shorts with this heat! A coffee, a first glimpse of the booths and exhibiting brands and then, time for the catwalk show, to get into the mood! Well, it’s now time to have a closer look at all these things …

287 pictures later, time for a refill. So here’s a little summary of the first day: except for this pair of Sperry Top-Siders, most of the stuff featured is part of the SS 2012 collections since this is a professional trade show: buyers come here to place orders (for a delivery at the beginning of 2012) while the press and media people come here to prepare their papers/posts/reports. Well, more tomorrow, we’re headed for the Happy Hour, more than welcome with this heat!

Second day at Who’s Next. We had a close look at Façonnable, which has just launched a new line, Façonnable Tailored Denim. We especially like the workwear-like creations, shirts with selvage details and jackets such as this one, really comfy with their linen lining. At Peter Schmid’s, we spotted some cool sneakers such as these high-tops, available for a reasonable price (170€). We tried a few items at American College. We liked the t-shirts and sweatshirts (really soft) and Romano tried on one of their signature Teddies, available all year long (170€).
Also met with young brand Cuisse de grenouille introduced by Traz last July and exhibiting for the first time. Nice new items coming up: belts made of plaited wool, knitted ties, scarves and swimsuits. Cute and affordable products.
Let’s finish this first debrief with Jojo Messenger’s amazing bags, thought especially for bike riders. Outer shell in German Cordura (extra-resilient textile fiber by DuPont), Italian vegetable-tanned leather, French-made tarpaulin lining. Finishing is remarkable on backpacks and Messengers, accessories are very clever.

4th and last day at Who’s Next. We felt like extending the summer at the Escadrille, a French brand of espadrilles all enhanced with leather inner soles for added comfort.
At Bérangère Claire’s, there’ll always be lovely checked shirts featuring the signature stag topped with the cross of Lorraine. But we also found a really sweet blue shirt, seersucker bermudas and this trench coat, available in beige and blue for 290€.
We then met with the Piola team with whom we’d spoken on the phone while preparing a post on the launch of the brand. The first sneakers sold well and Piola is developing new models for the SS 2012 season. The picture features an example of the upcoming high-top sneakers, also available in mid and scratch versions.
Last July, we’d shown you some of the upcoming Veja models. Here’s a little insight into the latest shades and materials, available on wallets and bags. More details next year, when the products are actually out on the market.
Last but not least, Miséricordia’s amazing collection with tons of cool pieces: elegant flannel pants, ¾-sleeved t-shirts with really cool prints, sweatshirts that are both comfy and nice. Big up for this light mid-season jacket.

As mentioned last May, the Who’s Next Blog contest gave 15 young designers divided into 3 categories (accessories, womenswear and menswear) the opportunity to exhibit at the trade show. Last June, the Jury (including Comme un camion) gathered to select these 15 designers. The first designer in each category will also be invited for the following Who’s Next trade show! Of course, mostly interested in the menswear selection, we went and met these young designers (unfortunately, brand D10119’s German designer, also selected, couldn’t make it).
Agnese Narnicka comes from Latvia. She created her brand in 2006 and has already won several contests. Her label features signature cuts and volumes. Her figures capture a well-studied nonchalance, mixing a variety of textures and shapes. She also makes cute jeans available for about 200€. And you’ll see her again in January 2012 at Who’s Next’s upcoming session because she ranked first in the menswear category! More on www.agnesenarnicka.com

Hachung Lee, originally from Korea, is a student at the London College of Fashion. His creations are inspired by the uniforms and armors of old-time Korean warriors. He’s giving his own modernized interpretation of these traditional elements with drapé effects as seen below on this piece worn by Romano. More on www.hachunglee.com

Louis Chow is a Chinese designer who also studied at the London College of Fashion. For his first collection in 2011, he drew his inspiration from Robert Morris’ “Portland Mirrors” (1998). This work of art, a type of optical illusion made of mirrors, is an invitation to endless meditation. Louis Chow has detailed this concept through a unisex collection using unexpected material mixes such as denim and jersey.

Virginie Rouffignac worked as a theater wardrobe mistress and stylist for prestigious designers (Chanel, Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin or Martin Margiela). With tons of humor, she created Nonos par Rouffignac, “Underwear for bad boys”. Her creations draw their inspiration from the 30s’ wrestling and circus scene. Everything is hand-made in her own Paris studio! Prices: between 30€ and 110€ for the more sophisticated silk models… More on www.virginier.com

Who’s Next ended last night. Time for a conclusion: tons of business cards exchanged, hundreds of pictures taken, millions of memories and painful blisters! Well, here’s a little retrospective of the fun time we had at Who’s Next. Can’t wait for the January session!
