We love nallik

It's time to discover the 15 winners of the WSNBlog young designer contest. They seduced our professional jury, thanks to their original and creative universe as well as their passion for fashion. We wanted to learn more about them...

This week, meet Nallik !

> How did you come upon the Who's Next Blog and its Young Designer contest?
I have heard about Who's Next from a buyer friend. So I investigated a little and through their posts on Facebook I found out about the Designer's Contest.

> What was your reaction when you found out you'd won?
I was in New York, waking up and going over my routine, coffee in bed and checking emails on phone, when I saw the post about the winners. I scrolled down and then screamed! I am really happy, especially because everything with NALLIK goes so well being a very young label. I see it as a very good sign.

> Can you briefly introduce yourself ?
I studied communication design in Germany and in Helsinki, Finland. My final work was a video installation.
After finishing my masters I worked as a photographer for a few years, mainly editorial work and participating in group shows. I then worked as an art director for  5 years, first in Germany, then in London and New York whilst traveling and producing all over.

It was fun but I missed a more hands on approach and I wanted to create something that's not on a computer or in print so I started taking silversmithing classes on the side. This passion grew quickly and after a while I made the leap and quit my job to do this full time as my next chapter. So far I have not regretted it!

> How did you start designing jewelry? Is it something you’ve always wanted to do?
It is more like I am being on a constant journey through creative disciplines where I come closer and closer to what my nature is. From photography to film to fashion, it is all affiliated with each other.

> What are your sources of inspiration ?
I am inspired by anything visual - how light moves, the form of natural elements like driftwood, but also pencil drawings and simplicity.
Also I am really into science and its structures, for instance NALLIK's logo is a pattern of the element of silicates. In general I love form and graphics.

> Fashion, what for ?
To work for you. I love functionality and simplicity but with an edge. I think if you wear a piece that is made well and has one, two elements that are not visible on the first look but make that piece stand out it can complement you in a very special way.

> Which artists would you like to make discover with the readers ?
Mascha Kalecko, poet.

Joachim Weischer, photographer/painter.

> Your news? Your projects ?
So far I have focused on necklaces which will be followed soon by a collection of bracelets and rings.

> Your favorite adresses in your city ?

Epistrophy in Nolita. Great Italian food.

Ted & Honey in Cobble Hill. My coffee spot.

Red Hook for watching sunsets.

> The one question you’d like to be asked ?
Want to go for a swim?

> Favorite drink?
Cappuccino in Italy!

> Describe a successful evening/night ?
No waiting in line. Some dancing. Friends around. Fun!

> The thing more the nutcase whom you did see ?
In NY you see all sorts of things, good and bad. But there was this one lady, about 40, who had a baby in her arms on the subway and was cradling it and whispering and smiling to it. She sat down next to me and we smiled at each other. When I looked to the baby to see how old it was I saw that it was a doll. It was strange but somehow beautiful because she was in her own happy world.

> Your last concert ?
Automelodi in Williamsburg.

> Your last exhibition ?
John Baldessari - Pure Beauty.

> A motto ?
Leap and the net will appear.

> One last word ?
Enjoy.
